Even I was grew up from a poor village without electricity in red China I was fortunate enough to see most advanced jet plans at the time.

Even I was grew up from a poor village without electricity in red China I was fortunate enough to see most advanced planes at the time.

It was because there was a military airbase near my hometown, when I was a kid I had chance to see many different air planes flying by in low altitude and dreamed someday I can fly too.

I heard rumors about that airport, said it was an very important one, it was built to defense Shanghai.

I only got one chance to see the airport when i was in middle school. It was my first time see the airplanes from a very close distance. I even got a chance to clime into a fighter jet (likely J-5) during that visit.

Another interesting discovery I remembered during that visit was the "home" of the jets, there was not enough hanger, so they build this round hills instead. (You can see thm in the map below)

According to what I found from Internet this airport is actually pretty important just like what I heard since childhood.

"China gathered over 1,000 fighters, transport planes, and bombers at Rugao Airbase in central China, which became the second largest aircraft storage facility in the world, ranking only after Davis-Monthan AFB in the United States. "
